Queen of Pentacles – Not Scared to Get Her Hands Dirty

queenpentssizedsmall2We’ve recently been working on the Queen of Pentacles for our Cultural Revolution Tarot and came up with a few different angles. Both cards show our Queen feeding pigs on a farm with a cornfield and tractor in the background. As always when designing Tarot cards, you have to think up ways of depicting the images with the number of cups, swords and so on always kept in mind. In this case we needed to place one Coin shaped object. One version has it placed on the feed sack, and the other in the feed bucket.

Practical and hard working, the Queen of Pentacles finds herself easily at home in Cultural Revolution propaganda style poster art. Mao liked his female figures in the propaganda art to be strong and active, images that empowered women because Mao felt that women were equally vital to The Cultural Revolution.

Coming from a farm background myself i find it interesting that this time around i’m illustrating farmwork. I think one of the challenges in creating artwork of this nature is trying to keep with some semblance of realism while appealing to a 11001789_673826542745939_5295872706027086678_ngeneral audience. I’ve had comments that in the artwork with the sack, her forearms are too big and that the pigs look like they are nonchalant at feeding time. Someone else wished that the pigs were smiling. Growing up on a farm and having farmers for neighbours, i can assure you that a woman who is fit to haul around feed sacks to feed pigs, is no pixie, nor do pigs look happy, or smile or anything of the kind (though of course one could interpret it as such).

In my personal opinion, a lot of Queen of Pentacles depictions are nothing more than a woman on a throne surrounded by crops or whatever else but the thing i think works great with ours is that she is an actual farmer. You don’t see her wearing a crown or jewelry or long flowing robes or dresses. She’s out getting her hands dirty, she’s a worker and i think Christine’s direction with this is excellent.

The Cultural Revolution Tarot can be found on our site for 40 U.S dollars (at the time of writing). For the brits, this relates to little over 26 pounds. Go buy our controversial kick ass work of art and you won’t be dissappointed
